About a billion years ago (well, the 19th of November last year actually) I was contacted by Graham from Blocks Magazine to let me know that my build Boris’ Post Office would be featured in their upcoming 100 Incredible LEGO Builds publication.

In case you don’t know, I live in Australia, which is quite a long way from the UK where Blocks Magazine is published, so even a regular Blocks Magazine is several months out of date before it makes it to our shores (not to say that it actually goes out of date, just that the news is not necessarily new when the magazine gets here), so suffice to say I had to wait a very long time for this special edition to arrive before I could actually take a look in it and see what was said about my build.

The build in question, Boris’ Post Office is a Neo Fabuland post office build that was part of my large Neo Fabuland display which I built in 2019 and displayed in 2020, Edward’s Island, you can find out what my aims were for the Neo Fabuland project in my original blog post exploring the theme here.

When the magazine arrived I hurriedly tore it out of it’s packaging and flipped through it as quickly as I could to page 30 where my build is featured (I also went and looked through all the other pages at the awesome builds that were featured, but you know..). I was really happy to see that my build was reviewed by George Gilliat, the designer of the Majestic Tiger set and all manner of cute, clever animal builds (as well as some stand out Harry Potter sets amongst other things).

Here is what George had to say about Boris’ Post Office:

“This model of Boris’ Post Office looks just like something from one of the original sets, but is constructed with so many interesting and complex building techniques, such as the use of hinges to create a realistic bay window.”

“It’s very nice to see a blend of modern elements, like cheese slopes and DOTS tiles, mixed in with some of the original Fabuland elements, like the sign and the letterbox.”

So there you have it, I was pretty pleased with what was said, and I think that my aims for Neo Fabuland have come across, thanks to George for taking the time to look at my build and to the Blocks Magazine team for including it!

Who should be next? https://harrisbricks.com/2022/12/who-should-be-next/ https://harrisbricks.com/2022/12/who-should-be-next/#respond Fri, 16 Dec 2022 10:57:56 +0000 https://harrisbricks.com/?p=4985

This week I added a new product to my store, a new Fabuland inspired enamel pin featuring Chester Chimp, and suffice to say it has been a very popular product so far!

I have had the idea of illustrating my own Fabuland pins for a while, and this is the first of many, but the question is, who should be next? Which of the extensive range of Fabuland characters should I choose for my next enamel pin design?

I have decided to ask you who you thing I should choose, so let me know! Either post a comment below, send me an email, or comment on one of my social media posts on Facebook or Instagram and I will collect up the responses and use them to make a decision!

Boris in 100 Incredible LEGO Builds https://harrisbricks.com/2022/11/boris-in-100-incredible-lego-builds/ https://harrisbricks.com/2022/11/boris-in-100-incredible-lego-builds/#respond Sat, 19 Nov 2022 00:18:27 +0000 https://harrisbricks.com/?p=4743

I received an email from Graham at Blocks Magazine yesterday to let me know that my Neo Fabuland build, Boris’ Post Office is featured in their new special edition, 100 Incredible LEGO Builds.

Blocks 100 Incredible LEGO Builds is our celebration of fan creativity to mark 100 issues of Blocks magazine. And it’s guest edited by LEGO Head of Design Matthew Ashton, with the LEGO design team providing commentary on each of the 100 models featured inside.

I am quite interested and excited to find out what they had to say about Boris, and my take on Fabuland in general, but I will need to wait for my copy to make its way from the UK to Australia before I can find out!

Thank you to Graham and the Blocks Magazine Team for including my build.

You can order your own copy of 100 Incredible LEGO Builds now at blocksmag.com.

Edward’s Island in BrickJournal https://harrisbricks.com/2021/09/edwards-island-in-brickjournal/ https://harrisbricks.com/2021/09/edwards-island-in-brickjournal/#respond Sun, 26 Sep 2021 15:16:43 +0000 http://harbri.websitesbystudioink.com/?p=3334

My Neo Fabuland display, Edward’s Island is featured in the November 2021 issue of BrickJournal, it even made the front cover!

The magazine is not out until the 13th of October, but you can subscribe and see a preview of some content in the issue here.

I was interviewed by Joe Meno from BrickJournal about the idea of Neo Fabuland and my build, Edward’s Island, if you would like to find out what was said you will need to get your hands on Issue 70 of the magazine!

Thank you to Joe and the team at BrickJournal for reaching out to me and making this happen, I really appreciate it!

Neo Fabuland on LEGO Ideas https://harrisbricks.com/2021/01/neo-fabuland-on-lego-ideas/ https://harrisbricks.com/2021/01/neo-fabuland-on-lego-ideas/#respond Mon, 18 Jan 2021 03:00:32 +0000 http://harbri.websitesbystudioink.com/?p=2867

Well I have to say that it looks like my experiment into Neo Fabuland on LEGO Ideas has not worked.

On the 11th of July 2020 I submitted a Neo Fabuland project to the LEGO Ideas platform called Catherine Cat’s Café (you can check it out on LEGO Ideas here) but over the past 191 days it has so far only managed to garner 387 supporters.

I can only deduce that either the idea itself did not capture the imaginations of Fabuland fans, or that the audience of Fabuland fans is too small to provide enough supporters for a LEGO Ideas project. I do know that the online community of Fabufans is much smaller for example than the community to Classic/Neo-Classic Space fans so it does make promoting these projects quite difficult.

It is a shame of course – having put in quite a lot of work into the project – but you never know how these things will be received and if they will find an audience or not.

My plan at the moment is to leave the project up in the short term, though as it only has 204 days left to find supporters before the LEGO Ideas team removes it, I will eventually end up taking it down myself.

Edward’s Island on LEGO Australia https://harrisbricks.com/2020/05/edwards-island-on-lego-australia/ https://harrisbricks.com/2020/05/edwards-island-on-lego-australia/#respond Tue, 19 May 2020 10:13:22 +0000 http://harrisbricks.websitesbystudioink.com/?p=2132

Today my build Edward’s Island was featured on the LEGO Australia Facebook Page. Suffice to say it made my day to see something that I built shown by LEGO to their own social media audience.

Thank you to the LEGO team for featuring my build, I am not really sure how to top that one!

Edit: Today (one day later) they took it down, and I thought there was something wrong, only to see them reinstate the post minutes later including the work of six other Australian builders, now the title makes sense!

This morning I awoke to the news that my Neo Fabuland build, Edward’s Island was featured on The Brothers Brick.

Thank you to The Brothers Brick team for making this happen, and especially to Lino Martins for his awesome review of Edward’s Island which you can read here.

I should also thank Lino for reviewing Boris’ Post Office back in August last year as well, you can read that review here.
