MacKenzie Quarters build by HarrisBricks

This build comprises of a LEGO replica of MacKenzie Quarters which stands at 10-12 MacKenzie Street in my home town of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. Originally built in 1877 as a Deanery and School hall for the neighbouring All Saints Church. Lovingly restored, it now operates as a boutique events space, guest accommodation, and restaurant, Ms Batterhams.

This build was commissioned by the owners of MacKenzie Quarters and I have recreated the building largely as it stands today including the basement restaurant, upstairs bar and events space and accommodation space. Check out the real building on Google StreetView here.

I also created some custom stickers for this build including the signage and menu boards.

Visit the MacKenzie Quarters website here and find out all about this amazing place.

This build is a LEGO replica of Charing Cross, the very centre of my home town of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.

Each year for Bendigo Bricks, Bendigo LEGO User Group’s annual brick show, I like to display something from Bendigo built out of LEGO bricks (in the past I have exhibited my Former Bendigo Fire Station and the Shamrock Hotel) and I decided that for Bendigo Bricks 2020 I was going to tackle a streetscape incorporating multiple facades. There are a number of places in Bendigo I could have chosen but I settled on Charing Cross this time as it has a good mix of different building styles.

Charing Cross is the intersection of View Street and Pall Mall and effectively stands at the centre of the city and is one of Bendigo’s busiest and most prominent intersections, check out the real place on Google StreetView here. In my build I wanted to capture Charing Cross on an average day featuring Bendigonian’s going about their daily lives.

My build includes four distinct facades, starting from left to right they are the Former Commercial Bank of Australia which stands at 11 View Point, 13-15 View Point, the beautiful art nouveau Former Royal Bank Building at 17 View Point and the Former Australian Mutual Provident Society Building at 21 View Point. I have tried to show these buildings as they appear today in their current uses.

Other features include Bendigo’s cenotaph, as well as a couple of elements that I built in the past, namely my Bendigo Bus and my Alexandra Fountain (though I have given it a new base in this build, one that is much more representive of its actual location).

I also wanted to include an iconic Bendigo Tram in this build and settled on No. 84. You can find out more about this historic tram here.

This build is a LEGO replica of the Alexandra Fountain, one of the most prominent landmarks and monuments of my home town of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. Known locally as simply ‘The fountain’ it stands at the centre of the city.

Designed by W.C Vahland in 1881 and named in honour of Alexandra, Princess of Wales, the fountain is located in Bendigo’s Charing Cross, the intersection of View Street and Pall Mall. Check out the real place on Google StreetView here.

The Alexandra Fountain is the second largest and most ornate municipal fountain in Victoria and stands 8.5 metres high and sits in a 15 metre diameter circular pool. It is made from 20 tonnes of local granite, cast iron and painted stone. You can find out more about it here.

This build now forms part of my Charing Cross display.

The Shamrock Hotel https://harrisbricks.com/project/the-shamrock-hotel/ https://harrisbricks.com/project/the-shamrock-hotel/#respond Sat, 29 Dec 2018 04:42:23 +0000 http://harrisbricks.websitesbystudioink.com/?post_type=avada_portfolio&p=204
This build comprises of a LEGO replica of The Shamrock Hotel which stands on the corner of Pall Mall and Williamson Street in my home town of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The building itself comprises of four storeys of red Bendigo brick covered in a decorative rendered facade and features an elaborate mansard roof and two storey verandah.

The building was designed by Bendigo architect Phillip Kennedy and built in 1897, and you can find out more about it on the Victorian Heritage Register.

I have chosen to recreate the building largely as it stands today including the bar, foyer, staircases, reception area, laneway, Bob Boutique, commercial kitchen, meeting rooms, The Federation Room, and three guest suites. Check out the real building on Google StreetView here.

The Federation room is set up with a wedding reception in full swing, commemorating the 3rd of November 2012 when my wife Kara and I held our wedding reception there – you can see Kara and I as minifigs.

I also created some custom stickers for this build including the Shamrock Hotel menu boards, the Shamrock Hotel logo (which I also designed in my day-to-day life as a Graphic Designer) on the groundfloor window of the bar, the artwork featured throughout the building, some meeting notes, computers and light switches.

This build is a LEGO replica of the former Bendigo Fire Station that stands at the top of View Street in my home town of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. It is a beautiful two-storey brick-faced building with stucco detailing that has been a part of my life ever since I went to drawing classes there when I was 10 years old.

The building was designed by architect William Beebe, built during 1898-99 and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Originally built to be a fire station, over the course of its life it has had other uses.

I have chosen to recreate the building as it serves today as a performance space called ‘The Engine Room‘ and I have recreated the theatre space downstairs as well as the rehearsal space upstairs. In the downstairs space I have depicted the theatre space during the annual Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival with a performance underway by local band Alawishus Jones & the Outright Lies and upstairs I have a ballet class about to commence. Check out the real building on Google StreetView here.

I also created some custom stickers for this build including the distinctive Fire Station lettering redrawn from the facade of the building, the date above the door, the window inlays, the dedication plaque, exit signs and a banner on the side of the building promoting Bendigo LEGO User Group.
