I have started posting a few images of the minifig inhabitants of my Ice Planet Badlands build, and I wanted to post about the choices I have made in their design and where they come from.

The basis for my Ice Planet Badlands minifigs of course is the original Ice Planet 2002 minifigs as my minifigs are meant to be the same characters and their descendants, thirty years in the future. This reasoning lead me to make several choices.

Hair Colour

If we look at the three original Ice Planet figures they all either have red or white hair, so their descendants will have the same. Luckily there a lot of red and white hair pieces available now!

Headwear

I have decided to have a broader colour palette for Ice Planet Badlands, allowing for thirty years of changes and variations including handmade and scavenged attire so some elements including helmets have more colours that just their original colours. For the most part I have used white helmets of various varieties with trans neon orange visors but I also have blue helments and different goggle and visor attachments.

Torsos

I did try a few different combinations, but to have the figure read as Ice Planet I found that I needed to keep mainly black with white sleeves and blue gloves. This will give the impression that they have retained their uniforms but augmented them over time with buckles, sashes, and tech gear. A lot of the torsos I have used are either original Ice Planet ones or Ninjago ones. I will also be designing my own.

Legs

As with the torsos it became pretty clear early on that I needed to retain the colour balance of mainly black legs and blue hips to have the figures read as Ice Planet, however I have used quite a range of legs with printed detail of chains, sashes, belts, kneepads, spikes etc mostly from Star Wars, Ninjago and CMFs.

Armor

Apparently for survival in the badlands environment shoulder armor is a big plus, thankfully Ninjago and the various CMF series offer a lot of range and versatility in this area. I think the white ones look the best, but have mixed it up with various shoulder armor pieces to give a more eclectic feel to the group.

Weapons

All the weapons in Ice Planet Badlands have to either have existed in Ice Planet 2002, or have been adapted from then, or they need to be completely handmade weapons constructed from scavenged materials. My Badlands inhabitants so far have chainswords, guns, staves, crossbows, bows and arrows, katanas and axes. They may improvise other weapons as time goes on.

Here are the minifigs I have put together so far, there will be some changes and more minifigures to come, but it gives you a taste of where I am going. Let me know what you think!
