It has taken me while to get onto this post, as I have been very busy since we got home from Melbourne last Sunday, but here are my top five builds from the Brickvention 2025!
Kraken by Dave McWilliams
I was lucky to see this build in development as Dave created it as part of a collaborative build that I was also a part of, Blackskull Archipelago.
From the moment Dave told our group that he planned to contribute a kraken attacking a ship to our pirate display, I knew it was going to be special.
The form of Dave’s kraken is inspired by LEGO part 6086, a truly inspired decision on his part that makes the build instantly connect to decades of fond LEGO memories for long term LEGO fans.
I love how Dave is able to create large scale sculptural forms from LEGO bricks, we have seen him employ these skills before in his life sized gollum build as well as another recent build of his, The Behemoth.
Fantastic work as always Dave!
New Hashima Downunder
This build is the work of ten builders, namely Josh Morris, Handoko Setyawan, Jackson Shapiera, Rohan Beckett, Lewis Meeny, Tom Scott, Mark Curnow, Helena Geyer, Liam Hunter and Cadder and is a uniquely Australian take on Stefan Formentano’s New Hashima standard.
The build is a highly detailed cyberpunk city with a distinctly Australian focus by this collection of very talented builders. Each builder has brought their own skills and techniques to realise this amazing display. I particularly love all the tiny details, textures and scenes created throughout the build.
If you get a chance to see New Hashima Downunder at an event this year, make sure you check it out!
Year of the Dragon by Joss Ivanwood
Joss seems to have a unique eye and understanding of the shapes and connection points that make up the LEGO system, the techniques he employs to allow the creation of life-filled organic forms from static pieces of plastic is truly awe-inspiring.
Over the course of 2024 (The Year of the Dragon) Joss undertook a project which saw him creating a unique intricately detailed dragon build each month, and we were lucky enough to see the collection displayed together at Brickvention 2025. I have only included three of Joss’ dragons in this post, but make sure you check them all out on his Instagram.
Amazing builds once again Joss!
The Key by Tamara Dadswell
Tamara Dadswell is a builder whose work I have admired for many years, and this year’s The Key is no different.
The figure in Tamara’s build is fantastic, but for me the true genius is in the table (particular the leg and corner details), the bird cage and the keys themselves.
Fantastic work and truly inspiring parts usage as always Tamara!
Crystal Stronghold by Gabriel Thomson
Gabriel Thomson has been building inspirational highly detailed builds for many years, and his Crystal Stronghold as displayed at Brickvention 2025 is a masterclass in texture, detail and colour use.
Well done Gabriel.
So there you have it, my top five builds from Brickvention 2025. Did you attend the event? If so I would love to know how your top five list compared to mine!
If you enjoy these builds please make sure you connect with the builders and show them your support.
