One of the aims for my current build is to create my own new crown knights faction by combining the crown knight faction featured in the original Yellow Castle set, 375 Castle and the crown knight faction featured in the 2007 Castle theme.

The first thing I decided to do was to take a look at the visual material relating to the two factions, which I have collected below. This includes shields, flags and minifig torsos.

There is one distinct similarity between the two factions, and that is that there is a large crown as the primary symbol of the faction, but there are also quite a few differences between the two that I will need to reconcile.

Colour Scheme

The Yellow Castle Crown Knights have a pink/magenta, yellow, blue and dark grey colour scheme to their livery whereas the 2007 Castle Crown Knights have an azure, dark blue, gold and light bluish grey colour scheme. I will aim for a new colour scheme that combines aspects of both palettes in my new faction.

Visual Style of the Crown

The crown of the Yellow Castle Crown Knights is highly simplified and features rounded, curved points whereas the crown of the 2007 Castle Crown Knights is more intricately detailed and features flared cross and spearhead forms. I definitely think I need to combine the two directions in my new crown emblem for the faction.

Simplification vs detail

As we all know, over time LEGO minifig designs have gotten more and more detailed, so I believe that my new faction should also skew towards a more detailed aesthetic to look like it is current rather than from the seventies.

The pennant

One element that I particularly like from the 375 Castle Crown Knights faction can be seen as a graphic both on the castle itself and below the crown on their flag, this is a small pennant. I am going to incorporate this into my new faction and it is also giving me an idea as to a new name.

Something else to consider

Another thing that I will consider in the design of my new crown knights faction is the time period in which my Yellow Castle build will be set, as I am aiming for the year 1650, the medieval attire of both the 375 Castle Crown Knights and the 2007 Castle Crown Knights is anacronistic to my intended time period, so I will need to renaissance them up!

In my next post I will be showing my designs for the new faction, you’ll have to come back and check out my next blog post to see what I come up with!
