I have been contemplating what to name my Ice Planet Badlands build for a while and I have decided to post about it today.

Named Ice Planet 2002 sets:

  • Ice Planet Scooter
  • Ice Tunnelator
  • Celestial Sled
  • Blizzard Baron
  • Ice-Sat V
  • Deep Freeze Defender
  • Ice Station Odyssey

I wanted to give my Ice Planet Badlands build a name that feels conducive to the type of names used for the original 1993 Ice Planet 2002 sets and ideally gives some clue as to the nature of the build.

I started the process by quickly looking through all the original Ice Planet 2002 set names, I don’t know if you know but there are only actually eight Ice Planet 2002 sets, so it was a pretty quick process.

Most of the set names are for specific vehicles, so they are not really suited to this build, though there is one option that is kind of perfect – being that my build is mainly comprised of derelict buildings and underground structures – so giving it a name similar to Ice Station Odyssey would be ideal.

I don’t want people to think that my build is meant to be a reimagined Ice Station Odyssey itself  – because it isn’t – but I do like the idea that it might be seen as another as-yet-unseen Ice Station, now derelict.

So the next step was to come up with a name for the ice station that could be a companion to Ice Station Odyssey. I began by thinking about the word odyssey itself and looking for synonyms at Thesaurus.com but there was nothing that really worked.

Synonyms for odyssey: Adventure, Excursion, Expedition, Exploration, Pilgrimage, Quest, Sojourn, Trek, Tour

I then started to think more about the origins of the word odyssey, coming from the title of Homer’s epic poem describing Odysseus’ adventures in his ten-year attempt to return home from the Trojan War. I thought there is some good potential in Greek mythology.

The next place I looked was at a family tree of Greek gods and titans, and there were a few names that I thought had potential for Ice Stations eg: Ice Station Eos, Ice Station Charon, Ice Station Themis, Ice Station Artemis, Ice Station Hyperion, Ice Station Leto, I have mocked them up below:

I do think they look pretty good, and apart from the shorter names which are a little too unbalanced, they definitely have potential. Though as I thought more about these names, I realised that there is actually a name from Greek mythology that I believe suits my build perfectly.

I have decided to name my build Ice Station Icarus, specifically because of the legend of Daedalus and Icarus:

Icarus and Daedalus attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Daedalus warns Icarus, instructing him to fly neither too low nor too high, lest the sea’s dampness clog his wings or the sun’s heat melt them. Icarus ignores Daedalus’ instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt. He then falls into the sea, and drowns.

I think the reference to Icarus suits my build really well as it is literally the remains of a failed outpost on Krysto, where the former inhabitants have figuratively flown too close to the sun and we can see the outcome of their fall in the bombed out and destroyed structures.

What do you think of my idea? Does the name work? Let me know!
